Jamie Radford

Describe your role and responsibilities.

“Working as a Grade 3 Signalling Technician and Installer for RSS, I am responsible for renewing and maintaining existing signalling equipment as well as installing complete new works solutions at a variety of locations for some of the UK’s largest Principle Contractors, such as Colas Rail and S&C North Alliance. I have been given fantastic opportunities to work at Waterloo Station for Wessex Capacity Alliance where I was involved in upgrading one of the country’s busiest stations to help to increase safety and deliver improved levels of efficiency for train movements. Whilst working In Tonbridge for S&C South Alliance, I was an instrumental part of the construction of the new Locs that upgraded Earlswood Junction, a major intersection on the Brighton Main Line.”

How has RSS supported you in your development?

“RSS has been supporting my development through a series of in house training initiatives that has given me the necessary skills to progress within this sector and achieve my ambitions. The company most recently provided me with the opportunity to acquire the Signal Maintenance Testing certification. I am now looking forward to developing these skills in practice and with the support of mentorship I know the company will provide me with. Furthermore, the company utilised its internal capacity for providing NSAR approved rail courses through its sister company INFRA Skills to provide me with essential non-signalling courses like a Controller of Site Safety Recertification, Safe Work Leader Conversion, OLEC and Behavioural Based Safety qualification.

The company’s Technical Heads have been instrumental in improving my skills and knowledge by investing both time and resources into ensuring that I can provide a safe and high-quality service for clients. Job security is very important to me and many companies within the sector employ their staff on a zero-hour contract basis, however, RSS has established a workforce programme that has given me a full-time position within the company as well as dedicated hours.

The organisation has also created a culture that is both warm, friendly and inviting to new members ensuring that you feel part of the team.”

What is the best part of your job?

“The best part of my jobs is the satisfaction of both ensuring that a project is delivered on time and to budget.”

Jamie Grundy

Describe your role and responsibilities.

“I started working for RSS in 2016 as a Grade 3 Signalling Technician. I chose RSS as they were a well-established company, with exciting plans for the future and for the last 2 years, each day has been both challenging and rewarding. It is not often that you get the opportunity to work on projects for industry renowned organisations such as Wessex Capacity Alliance, where I was a fundamental part of the team that was tasked with signalling renewals, and S&C South Alliance, which provided me with the critical role of fitting out new Locs for the Earlswood Junction Upgrade.”

How has RSS supported you in your development?

“After working for a well-known signalling contractor for 5 years I was made redundant. RSS became aware that I was looking for work and recognised how my skills and knowledge could benefit the company and advance its signalling division. They provided me with a full-time position that has been key to addressing my concerns of a shortage of hours and work, which was a major issue at my previous employer. Dave Hersey [Head of Signalling] has been very supportive in relation to ensuring that I continue to progress with my training. The company has developed a care package that includes occupational health benefits and after an injury they supported my return to work through a phased return to work programme.”

What is the best part of your job?

“My favourite part of the job is the trust that RSS places in its workforce and the people that I work with. It’s great to work with individuals that care so much about their company and doing a good job. It’s hard to find that environment today because so many people just don’t care about honesty, hard work & integrity.”
